Valve Threatened to Remove Rainbow Six Siege From Steam
Valve gave Ubisoft 24 hours to change Rainbow Six Siege’s price after a steep discount on Ubisoft Connect, warning it would remove the game from Steam.
Valve threatened to remove Rainbow Six Siege from Steam after Ubisoft ran a steep discount for the game on its UPlay launcher, later rebranded Ubisoft Connect in 2020. Valve gave Ubisoft 24 hours to change the price or face removal from its storefront.
The dispute took place several years ago while both companies managed their PC launchers. Valve issued an ultimatum that required Ubisoft to adjust the game’s price within a day; Valve warned that failure to comply would result in the game’s removal from Steam.
Pulling Rainbow Six Siege from Steam would have posed a commercial risk for Ubisoft. By 2024 the title had generated more revenue than almost any other franchise in Ubisoft’s catalog. On Steam the game reaches a daily peak of roughly 75,000 concurrent players.
Valve operates Steam, a leading PC game storefront, and has faced legal scrutiny in recent years over its market position and platform policies. The companies have not publicly detailed their internal negotiations.
Both Valve and Ubisoft have continued to offer PC distribution through multiple channels since the incident. Rainbow Six Siege remains available on Steam and continues to contribute to Ubisoft’s sales and player numbers.
