Swisher: M80 teaching JBa the ‘why’ ahead of Stage 2
M80 coach Michael “Swisher” Schmid says the team is teaching Josh “JBa” Barutt the reasoning behind plays to make him more independent as M80 enters Stage 2 after a 3-1 Stage 1 finish.
Michael “Swisher” Schmid said M80 is focusing on explaining the reasoning behind plays to Josh “JBa” Barutt so the player can act more independently as the team moves into Stage 2 of the 2026 season. The club finished Stage 1 with a 3-1 record at LAN.
Swisher reported personal improvement on LAN, registering a 1.16 rating this term. He noted that Mason “Lake” Sanderson and JBa are both above a 1.20 rating on LAN. The three Americans are the top-rated players on the roster at the moment.
The organisation added analyst Luca “Munstur” Ioanițiu, formerly with Passion UA. Swisher said M80 had not had an analyst for over a year and credited Munstur with tightening preparation and managing vetoes. “We haven’t had an analyst for over a year; Munstur has been super helpful,” he said, adding that clearer prep lets the team focus in depth on two or three maps instead of spreading effort across many.
Swisher described the work with JBa as shifting from simple instructions to teaching decision-making. He pointed to JBa’s background in pugging and a stint at Wildcard where coaching often focused on directives rather than reasons. “We’re trying to help get him feeling the game more and getting him into a sense of, ‘Josh, you have the power to do your own things and make your own calls,'” Swisher said. He added, “To be a top player and to be a top team, you can’t be babied,” describing the goal of increasing JBa’s on-map independence.
Role adjustments have also affected recent results. Swisher returned to rotator roles after previously filling anchor positions on maps such as Dust2. He said the rotator role matches what he played before joining M80 and credited the change, together with improved aiming, for his form this year.
Swisher reviewed recent matches directly, grading the loss to B8 as an “F-tier” performance while calling the Inferno comeback and the team’s CT play stronger in later fixtures. He pointed to successful eco rounds and an improved showing on Ancient in the latest match.
The roster includes two German players. If M80 reaches arena stages later in the season, those players would be on home soil. The club has not yet reached Stage 3 or Stage 4 this season; recent coaching additions and role clarity are part of its approach as it prepares for tougher opposition in Stage 2.
