Sony Rejected Bungie’s ‘Destiny Infinity’ Rebrand Plan
Reporter Paul Tassi says Sony declined Bungie’s plan to rebrand Destiny 2 as Destiny Infinity and move from two yearly expansions to one annual expansion.
According to Paul Tassi, Bungie proposed renaming Destiny 2 to Destiny Infinity and changing its release model to one large annual expansion instead of two major expansions per year.
Bungie argued the change would refresh the franchise and maintain player engagement without building a full new numbered sequel. Industry estimates place the cost and development time for a full sequel at about $550 million and five to six years.
The report says the Destiny Infinity plan would require significantly less funding than a new title. Sony declined the proposal and has not moved forward with the concept. Tassi wrote that “Destiny 3 is not currently in development and the chances of it entering production are virtually nonexistent.”
Bungie is focusing on its live-service project Marathon. Marathon’s second season begins on June 2, and Bungie will offer a week-long free access period around the launch. The studio has said it hopes those initiatives will increase interest among players, particularly on consoles.
Destiny 2 has run on a cadence of two major expansions per year supplemented by seasonal content. The Infinity concept would have consolidated major content drops into a single annual expansion while keeping seasonal updates.
With Sony declining the rebrand, Bungie has not advanced the Destiny Infinity plan and continues to prioritize existing live-service work rather than a numbered sequel.
