Monte reaches Cologne stage three after tactical tweaks

Monte advanced to stage three at ESL One Cologne after the team introduced new default variations and shifted AZUWU into a more active entry role. The European side beat Legacy and paiN and forced a tight match with G2, results that helped secure Europe an extra Major spot for Singapore.

The changes follow a 9-11th finish at Astana and the squad’s earlier CCT Finals win that earned them a Major invite. The team’s in-event adjustments included more varied default plans and clearer roles for early-round actions to reduce predictability against higher-level opponents.

Jack von Spreckelsen (Gizmy), Monte’s in-game leader, described the result as the primary objective and said the team still has minor issues to tidy. He noted the group ground out key rounds on the T side and will review missed details from several maps, including recent losses on Dust2.

Coach and analyst work focused mainly on the CT side. Alexander Szymanczyk (kakafu) has taken responsibility for CT system design and rotation plans, aligning those with AWP movements and utility usage. Gizmy highlighted the coordination required when the AWP executes a move, saying teammates adjust their timing and utility use across the map.

AZUWU’s form improved after targeted coaching on entry timing and risk management. Staff worked with the entry fragger to reduce instances of conceding openings and to find ways to trigger him within team strategies. Gizmy credited both coaching input and the player’s own adjustments; he also noted, with a laugh, that AZUWU has been performing while ill.

Monte’s approach in Cologne mixed fast, aggressive rounds with slower, detail-focused play. The team briefed players to slow rounds after entries against Brazilian opponents to avoid feeding momentum, and emphasized micro-level decisions following initial engagements.

The immediate objective is to reach the playoffs in stage three and face the event’s top teams. Gizmy said several of his university exams were deferred to compete, though a few assessments remain scheduled in the coming months and could conflict with future tournament dates.
