KeSPA fines Gen.G AD carry Ruler 20M KRW over tax case

KeSPA fined Gen.G AD carry Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk 20 million KRW and ordered 40 hours of community service after a tax tribunal found improperly structured finances.

The Korea e-Sports Association’s Sports Fairness Committee has imposed a 20 million KRW fine and 40 hours of community service on Gen.G AD carry Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk following a tax dispute that became public in March 2026.

A National Tax Service review found that between 2018 and 2021 Ruler had listed his father as a manager, claimed related payments as deductible labor expenses and held stock in his father’s name. Tax authorities judged those arrangements improper and assessed additional income tax and gift tax against the player.

Ruler appealed the tax assessment in August 2023. The Tax Tribunal dismissed the appeal and published its decision in March 2026, citing a lack of evidence that the father performed a genuine management role and no clear justification for holding stock in his name beyond tax avoidance. The tribunal’s public ruling prompted complaints from fans alleging reputational harm to professional esports.

KeSPA reviewed the matter over several weeks, conducting document reviews and direct interviews with the player. The Sports Fairness Committee applied Article 33, Paragraph 1, Item 4 of the Esports Fairness Committee Regulations, which covers conduct that “severely damage[s] the dignity of an esports professional.”

The committee factored in several mitigating elements: Ruler paid the full tax amount assessed by authorities, returned stocks that had been held in trust and is not facing criminal charges related to the matter. The committee issued the disciplinary penalty as an internal measure distinct from the tax authority’s financial assessments.

Ruler has seven days from formal notice to file an appeal with the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee’s Sports Fairness Committee. The penalty was announced as the esports industry prepares for Global Esports Industry Week and IEM Cologne in mid-June 2026.

KeSPA’s written statement read, “This decision is intended to clearly affirm the responsibilities and ethical standards required of players and officials as esports becomes an institutionalized sport.”
