Fnatic’s STASHD platform draws fan criticism over loot mechanics
Fnatic launched STASHD on April 20, a digital crate and trading site with randomized openings, crate battles and a site currency, prompting fan backlash over gambling-like mechanics.
Fnatic launched STASHD on April 20, 2026. The platform, developed with Loot Labs, allows users to buy digital crates, open randomized rewards, enter ‘crate battles’, trade items and use a site-specific currency that can be earned via referrals and progression.
Fnatic wrote in its launch materials that the project is intended to extend community culture and connect fans through collecting. The organisation added that it did not want to produce ‘just another “drop” product’ and aimed to capture what makes collecting and showcasing items engaging.
Fans and community groups reacted on social media, raising concerns that STASHD’s mechanics resemble skin gambling and loot boxes. Fnatic Dragons wrote on X that the organisation it had supported for years was ‘now attaching its name to a platform built around a framework which reminds of gambling-adjacent practices’ and said their focus was protecting younger and impressionable fans.
Darren Pilkington, Fnatic’s Head of Commercial Operations, provided a statement in response to the feedback. He wrote that the organisation was ‘taking this very seriously’ and that its immediate priority was to speak directly with fans. Pilkington added Fnatic would not issue a full statement or answer specific questions at this time.
The launch comes as platforms and regulators have tightened rules on chance-based digital sales. Valve has moved to ban promotion of skin gambling, case-opening and skin-trading sites at officially licensed tournaments for titles including Counter-Strike 2. Regulators in Brazil have enacted measures restricting access to certain games for minors after concerns about chance-based mechanics in digital transactions.
STASHD’s mix of randomized openings, tradeable items and referral-driven currency has prompted questions about age limits and consumer protections. Fnatic has not provided detailed information on age restrictions, safeguards for minors or how the platform aligns with existing rules, and wrote that it will engage with fans in the coming weeks.
