Data links ‘Molotov’ deaths to VIP prop bets in esports probe

ESIC used Runestone telemetry to tie Dmytro ‘nifee’ Tediashvili’s repeated Molotov deaths in ESL Pro League Season 22 to sudden VIP prop-betting spikes, leading to a four-year ban.

The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC), working with data firm Runestone, found that Dmytro ‘nifee’ Tediashvili repeatedly died to Molotov and incendiary grenades during ESL Pro League Season 22. Investigators mapped those deaths to sudden spikes in high-value VIP prop bets and imposed a four-year ban.

Investigators combined time-stamped in-game telemetry with betting records to link specific death events to targeted wagers. The discipline tribunal said the pattern did not match ordinary errors and concluded the behavior was manipulated to trigger payouts without altering match results.

Prop bets allow wagers on single events inside a match, such as a player dying to a Molotov. The player involved can profit by creating a narrow event tied to a bet rather than by losing a match. ESIC noted such incidents can resemble normal mistakes to viewers and officials.

Runestone supplied match telemetry and a real-time data pipeline that enabled ESIC to overlay player movements, weapon use and death events with betting volumes and account histories. That timing analysis formed the core evidence cited in the sanction.

The ruling described the conduct as micro-level match interference rather than a conventional throw. ESIC’s document said opaque high-stakes accounts and certain market structures can allow large wagers on narrow outcomes with little visible effect on final scores.

Inner Circle, which had been in talks to sign Tediashvili, said it would not proceed with the roster move after the investigation. ESIC has increased its focus on betting-related offenses as markets have expanded.

The sanction imposes a four-year ban on Tediashvili for the conduct identified in the investigation. ESIC’s ruling calls for transparent, auditable data trails that can be matched to betting records as proposition betting grows.
