Cloud9 Returns to Worlds After Three-Year Absence

Cloud9 qualified for the 2026 League of Legends World Championship after defeating LYON in the LCS Summer Playoffs, ending a three-year absence from Worlds. The win secured Cloud9 an Upper Bracket spot in the Summer Split and made them the first LCS team to clinch qualification for Worlds 2026 in the United States.

The best-of series went to a deciding game. Cloud9 took early control in the opener, dropped the second map to LYON, then won the final game in 25 minutes to close the series. LYON moved to the Lower Bracket and will continue in the Playoffs with a chance to reach Worlds if they win through that bracket.

Cloud9 made several roster and coaching changes since their last Worlds appearance in 2023, when the team was eliminated in the early stages. The Playoff victory guarantees Cloud9 at least a top-three finish in the Summer Split; the team’s final placement will determine seeding for Worlds 2026.

Park “Thanatos” Seung-gyu was named series MVP. The qualification will be Thanatos’s first international tournament and also the first Worlds appearance for teammate Lee “Loki” Sang-min. Cloud9 will send two Korean players to the global event for the first time in this cycle.

Cloud9 will complete its remaining Summer Split matches while final standings and Worlds seedings are decided ahead of the 2026 World Championship in the United States.
