VCT China goes 0-8 in maps at VALORANT Champions Shanghai

VCT China ended Round 1 of VALORANT Champions in Shanghai without a single map win. TYLOO, EDward Gaming, XLG Esports and JD Gaming each lost their opening best-of-three series 0-2 and moved into the event’s elimination bracket.

TYLOO lost 0-2 to G2 Esports, with map scores of 6-13 and 3-13 for a combined 9-26 (-17 round differential). EDward Gaming was defeated 0-2 by LOUD, falling 8-13 and 5-13 for a 13-26 total (-13). Tournament debutant XLG Esports lost 0-2 to Karmine Corp, dropping maps 6-13 and 3-13 for a 9-26 total (-17). JD Gaming was swept 0-2 by FUT Esports, with scores of 11-15 and 10-13 for an 11-26 total (-15). Across the eight maps played, Chinese teams averaged 5.25 rounds won per map.

Regional results in Round 1 showed a clear disparity. VCT Americas recorded a 4-0 series result and an 8-0 map record. EMEA finished 3-1 in series, and the Pacific region went 1-3. Round 1 match wins included teams such as 100 Thieves, LOUD, NRG and G2.

The absence of map wins for all Chinese teams prompted commentary about qualification formats. Analysts and community figures questioned the fixed allocation of four slots per region at Champions and noted that some high-performing teams from other regions did not qualify for the event. One example cited was Leviatán, winners at Masters London, who did not reach Champions.

Commentary during and after Round 1 focused on tactical choices and preparation. Analysts highlighted map vetoes and agent selections, including use of Breach on Summit, a double-sentinel Deadlock setup on Ascent and rounds where teams started on the attacking side by veto. Some commentators on social media blamed coaching decisions and preparation rather than individual player performance.

Calls for changes included wider access to international scrims, revised coaching approaches and adjustments to qualification paths. Organizers and the Chinese franchises involved did not issue detailed public plans for next steps by the end of Round 1. VALORANT Champions Shanghai is the final Champions event of the VCT franchise era.
