TYLOO captain: Practice should teach judgment, not tactics

TYLOO in-game leader Jingxiang ‘Mercury’ Wang says practice must train players to make on-the-spot decisions as the team defends Asia’s top ranking and aims for the lone Major Stage 2 slot.

Jingxiang ‘Mercury’ Wang, TYLOO’s in-game leader, said practice should train players to make independent judgment calls rather than simply execute set plays. The comment comes as TYLOO recently overtook The MongolZ to become Asia’s top-ranked team and seeks the region’s single direct entry to Major Stage 2. Several ranking events remain before the cutoff.

Mercury, 25, took over as captain in the summer of 2024. He described increased responsibilities in preparing for opponents and adjusting TYLOO’s style from match to match to avoid predictability. He acknowledged the pressure of the role, noting that he enjoys leading the team but that losses sometimes prompt self-doubt and require mental adjustment. ‘I do enjoy it,’ he added, while also saying he needs to manage his mindset after tight defeats.

The team has been addressing comments from teammate WeiJie ‘zhokiNg’ Zhong, who previously pointed to game sense as a weakness compared with higher-tier international sides. Mercury said practice should focus more on default situations that force players to react and choose for themselves, rather than only rehearsing tactics written on a sheet. ‘The purpose of practice should lean more towards default play, and let the players encounter those sudden situations themselves, so they can make their own judgment calls, not just be limited to what’s written on the tactics sheet,’ he said through an interpreter.

On match preparation, Mercury outlined the planned approach while describing a collaborative relationship with the coach. He sets the basic strategy for matches and incorporates tactical suggestions from the coach into the team’s preparation.

TYLOO faces several events before the ranking cutoff. Being Asia No. 1 grants direct entry to Major Stage 2; other Asian teams must progress through Stage 1. The team is focusing its practice methods and match plans in the run-up to those events.
