Snappi retires as player, named HEROIC head coach

Marco “Snappi” Pfeiffer said his individual level declined and he retired as a player to make room for new faces after accepting the head coach role at HEROIC.

Marco “Snappi” Pfeiffer, 36, has retired from professional play after a nearly 20-year career across CS 1.6, CS:GO and CS2 and has accepted the head coach position at HEROIC. He attributed the change to a drop in his individual performance and said the organization supported bringing in new players.

The decision followed about 18 months of reflection. Snappi said early CS2 events were promising but that subsequent results and his personal form declined to a point that affected his role on the team. “When CS2 came the first four or five events were good, but then afterwards it’s been rough,” he said. “I think my individual level has gotten to the point where it’s better to let some new faces come in.”

Snappi described growing frustration with the gap between his past output and his recent performances and said the drop in form affected his in-game leadership. He added the final six months before retiring brought increased pressure because he felt he had to perform immediately or step away. “Either I perform now or it is retirement, and that added a different level of pressure than I think I ever had in my career,” he said. He also reported intensified online abuse during that period.

The change was largely mutual between Snappi and the organization. He revealed conversations with coach Xizt about the need for more firepower at his position and said management agreed a lineup change was appropriate. “Over the last months I started giving the idea to Xizt that maybe you need more firepower in my position,” he said. “In the end it was kind of mutual… I think it was more of an org decision that came down.”

Snappi said he took the HEROIC offer sooner than planned because he liked the team’s youth and potential. He had considered waiting for the post-Major transfer window but accepted the role when it was offered. He intends to approach coaching with a humble mindset and plans to study psychological and leadership methods, including books and courses, to develop new skills. “I have to come in with a humble mindset… Maybe books that I will need to read, courses that I will need to take in order to understand certain psychological things,” he noted. He also pointed to his long playing career as experience with different games and team dynamics.

HEROIC confirmed Snappi will begin work as head coach following his retirement as a player, marking the start of his first tenure on the coaching bench.
