Courtois, Gonzalo Vila Invest in Astralis Parent via NXTPLAY

Thibaut Courtois and entrepreneur Gonzalo Vila have invested in Fusion Esports Group, parent company of Astralis, through their joint vehicle NXTPLAY. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Thibaut Courtois and entrepreneur Gonzalo Vila have completed an investment in Fusion Esports Group, the corporate owner of Danish esports team Astralis. The deal was executed through their joint investment group, NXTPLAY. Neither party disclosed the amount or the stake acquired.

NXTPLAY previously concentrated on ownership of traditional football clubs, including Le Mans FC in France, CD Extremadura in Spain and KRC Genk in Belgium. Fusion described the new stake as the group’s first direct entry into the esports sector.

Fusion’s management noted that the investors’ experience in the sports business, together with an interest in gaming culture, will inform the organisation’s growth plans and community projects.

Courtois has followed Astralis for some time and viewed the investment as an opportunity to support Fusion’s projects around gaming communities. NXTPLAY was set up by Courtois and Vila to manage their joint investments.

The investment arrives amid recent leadership changes at Astralis and within Fusion. Fusion acquired Astralis about a year ago and appointed Julian Miculcy as vice president to lead the brand’s revival. Around a month ago Astralis named Morten Bro chief operating officer. Separately, Team Vitality co-CEO Vas Roberts left his position after 20 months.

Fusion and NXTPLAY have not released specific strategic plans tied to the investment. Public statements from the organisations highlight community-focused programmes and the intent to apply sports-management experience to the gaming business.
