Road to EWC opens global qualifiers for 2027 Esports World Cup

The Esports Foundation has opened a qualification programme linking independent tournaments and grassroots venues to the 2027 Esports World Cup in Riyadh.

The Esports Foundation has announced the 2027 EWC Qualifier Programme, which will connect third-party tournament operators, regional associations and grassroots venues to qualification for the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in summer 2027.

The programme operates under the “Road to EWC” banner and is expected to involve 1.8 million competitors across more than 400 events worldwide. It will provide additional qualification routes for players and allow independent organisers to participate in the EWC system.

The programme has two partner-run pathways. EWC Direct Qualifiers are intended for established international tournament operators. They can connect existing Tier 1 and Tier 2 competitions to the EWC circuit while keeping their event brands, commercial rights and operational funding.

EWC Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers are aimed at local communities, national federations, cyber cafés, universities and regional venues. Winners of approved Satellite LCQs will receive guaranteed places in the official summer 2027 Last Chance Qualifiers. The Esports Foundation will provide visa assistance, travel and accommodation for those competitors.

The Satellite LCQ route will initially cover Chess, Counter-Strike 2, FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves and Street Fighter 6. Approved partner tournaments must finish by June 1, 2027, and follow publisher rules and Esports World Cup integrity standards.

Applications for both pathways opened October 15, 2026, and will close December 20, 2026. The Foundation has not released the full list of participating tournaments or venues.

Faisal Bin Homran, chief product officer at the Esports Foundation, described the programme as a way to connect competitive pathways to one global event. “There are great tournaments and strong esports communities in every part of the world,” he said. “By bringing more of them into Road to EWC, we can create more opportunities for players to compete in their own market and give local esports ecosystems an official role in building the pathway to the Esports World Cup.”

The programme follows disruptions affecting several esports events linked to Saudi Arabia. The 2026 Esports World Cup was relocated from Riyadh to Paris after regional instability connected to the conflict in Iran. The inaugural Esports Nations Cup was postponed by one year, and the FIFAe Finals in Jeddah were deferred.

The Esports World Cup is scheduled to return to Riyadh in summer 2027.
