Dexter urges Thunder Downunder to ‘play with balls out’ in Cologne
Christopher “Dexter” Nong urged Thunder Downunder to “play with your balls out” at the Cologne Major after topping Oceania’s VRS rankings.
Christopher “Dexter” Nong urged his Thunder Downunder roster to “play with your balls out” as they prepare for the Cologne Major, after the Oceania team secured the region’s top VRS ranking and a spot at the event. The squad was formed in October 2025 and qualified despite spending the season based in Asia.
The roster includes Jay “Liazz” Tregillgas, Alistair “aliStair” Johnston, Tynan “TjP” Purtell and Tyson “asap” Paterson. Thunder Downunder gathered VRS points primarily through domestic competition and Asian events and moved ahead of FlyQuest in the standings before the Major.
Nong said the team planned its schedule to maximize VRS points, using calculations and AI checks to select events that improved their qualification path. The approach centered on climbing the VRS ladder rather than international travel, with several Asian LAN appearances and strong domestic results.
The team faced technical challenges while competing from Australia. Playing Asian opponents often meant 90–100 ms ping, a condition Nong described as forcing players to perform on a different scale. He proposed practical fixes, including a LAN center in Perth that would reduce ping to about 50 ms for local teams, or staging more Asian LAN events.
Expectations in Cologne are modest. Nong listed reaching Stage 2 as the team’s main objective and said a smaller goal is to upset fans’ pick’em brackets. At a Cologne media day interview he added, “The small goal is to definitely fuck people’s Pickems,” and noted the squad has been consistent across recent Majors.
On individual form, Nong pointed to Tyson “asap” Paterson’s strong domestic ratings and said his former Rooster teammates can match international competition if they find the right confidence. He called on the roster to back one another and bring aggressive play to European LAN matches.
Thunder Downunder’s qualification marks a rapid rise for a team assembled six months ago. The group arrives in Germany as underdogs with experience in regional events, a points-focused qualification strategy and the stated aim of advancing to Stage 2.
