VCT China Winless at Champions 2026 in Shanghai

All four Chinese teams at Champions 2026 in Shanghai were eliminated without winning a series, finishing 0-8 in matches and 2-16 in maps.

All four Chinese representatives at Champions 2026 in Shanghai were eliminated without winning a series, posting a combined 0-8 record in matches and 2-16 in maps. The results mark the poorest regional showing for VCT China at an international event.

The teams were EDward Gaming, TYLOO, XLG Esports and JD Gaming. Round differentials for the event showed EDward Gaming at -28, TYLOO at -27, XLG at -21 and JD Gaming at -15. Across the opening games the host region was swept 0-8 in maps and averaged 5.25 round wins per map.

EDward Gaming registered the lowest single-team total. Exactly 800 days after winning their Champions title, EDG won 24 rounds across four maps before elimination. That total is the fewest round wins recorded by a team at a Champions event and ties for the third-lowest round total at any VCT international event.

After the loss, EDward Gaming head coach Autumn acknowledged the team had practiced a Summit composition for four days ahead of the match against Global Esports and described it as a “gimmick comp.” The coach said staff felt they had not found viable strategic solutions during preparation.

Tournament analysts and observers noted specific drafting and tactical issues across the Chinese teams. Reported drafting problems included locking defensive double-Sentinel setups on attack, deploying Deadlock on Ascent, and forcing Breach-focused lineups on Summit. In-game issues called out were weakened trading discipline on site takes and retakes, passive utility use that left chokepoints uncleared, and frequent reliance on single-player heroics over coordinated team execution.

JD Gaming was the only Chinese squad to reach double digits on a map during the opening round of matches. All four teams failed to win a best-of series in their elimination matches.

The results prompted debate within the competitive community about slot allocation for Champions. The decision to guarantee four slots to the host region drew criticism from some stakeholders after high-performing teams from other regions, including Masters London winners, did not qualify for Champions 2026.

Champions 2026 concluded with the host-region teams eliminated. The outcomes have generated calls for reviews of team preparation and the qualification system ahead of future VCT events.
