Unused Resident Evil 4 Remake Files Tie Merchant to The Duke

Modder Keff0 found 671 unused lines and game data in the PS5 build of Resident Evil 4 Remake, including a Merchant line referencing The Duke and assets suggesting the Merchant could be killed.

Modder Keff0 examined PlayStation 5 files for the Resident Evil 4 Remake and reported finding 671 lines of unused dialogue and related game data. The material includes unused lines for Leon, Luis, Ashley and the Merchant and is not present in the PC build examined by the modder.

Among the entries is an unused Merchant line that names The Duke, the vendor character from Resident Evil Village. The line was removed before the game’s release; Capcom has not provided an explanation for the deletion.

The files also contain animation data and gameplay flags that indicate the Merchant may originally have been vulnerable to player attacks. Data found by Keff0 links the Merchant’s removal to the permanent loss of his shop and inventory access for the remainder of a playthrough rather than to a scripted scene.

The discovered material shows multiple alternate dialogue exchanges and gameplay options that do not appear in the final product. The PS5 files examined suggest differences in what was retained on disk across platforms and at different stages of development.

Capcom has not issued a statement about the cut dialogue or the gameplay flags related to the Merchant. The released remake keeps the Merchant as an invulnerable, persistent vendor and does not include the Duke reference found in the unused files.

Unused dialogue and assets are common in game development as teams test and discard ideas. Additional removed content may be found as other modders continue to examine files from different platforms.
