British Esports Arena due in Sunderland late this summer

British Esports plans to open the British Esports Arena in Sunderland late this summer, and the organisation reports a sharp rise in bookings for the arena, the National Esports Performance Campus, The Place accommodation and nearby gaming houses.

In a blog post, British Esports wrote there was “overwhelming demand” for space from event organisers and partners, a level of interest the organisation described as higher than expected.

The surge in bookings has prompted a recruitment drive. British Esports is hiring venue support staff and candidates with experience in brand activation, campaign management, content and social media. Advertised salaries range from £30,000 to £40,000, depending on experience.

The organisation has also promoted several senior staff ahead of the launch. Alice Whorley has moved from Head of Operations to VP of Operations with oversight of all facilities including the British Arena. Kalam Neale has been promoted from Head of Education to VP of Education, Skills and Innovation, expanding responsibilities to include coaching and education support services. Zuhrah Samim has been elevated from Group HR Manager to VP of People and Culture to manage staff through the expansion.

The British Arena is being set up for esports competitions and a range of other uses: live music, comedy nights, private events, broadcasts, industry showcases, sports events, match-day experiences and conferences.

The National Esports Performance Campus will provide performance facilities and an educational hub for coaching and esports student courses alongside training spaces.

British Esports cited Sunderland’s location and lower costs as factors in selecting the site. The city sits outside the usual English hub cities and offers cheaper accommodation, which organisers expect will make events and long-term stays more viable. The site provides simpler connections to Glasgow and Edinburgh for Scottish teams and relatively inexpensive ferry links to the Netherlands that could assist logistics for some mainland European events.

The announcement arrives amid renewed activity on the UK esports calendar, with recent LAN and arena events drawing large crowds across multiple titles. British Esports says it is preparing venue staff, accommodation and adjacent facilities to meet rising booking levels before the official opening later this summer.
