Visa scare nearly disqualified BetBoom at IEM Cologne

BetBoom nearly missed IEM Cologne after starter S1ren’s visa failed to arrive; substitute FL4MUS flew from Russia and reached Cologne in time for a 3-0 Stage 1 run.

BetBoom almost failed to field a roster for IEM Cologne after starter Pavel “S1ren” Ogloblin did not receive his visa in time. Sixth man Timur “FL4MUS” Marev travelled from Russia and arrived in Cologne shortly before the event, and the team won all three matches in Stage 1.

Aleksandr “zorte” Zagodyrenko recalled that the squad completed a full bootcamp expecting S1ren’s visa to clear during the camp. When it did not, the organisation and players turned to FL4MUS as a substitute. For a period the team feared disqualification; Zagodyrenko added that the organisation had experienced visa delays two or three times previously.

The late change left BetBoom with limited map practice. The team had prepared four maps before the first match day and had not practised Ancient at all. Despite that, BetBoom beat GamerLegion 2-0 on Ancient and finished Stage 1 with a 3-0 record.

Zagodyrenko described FL4MUS as an aggressive, proactive player who executes map scripts and takes forward positions. “If you don’t know what to do on the map, he just goes like, ‘okay, I’m pushing the smoke,'” he recalled, saying that the substitute’s initiative opened space for teammates.

Zagodyrenko has been playing as a stand-in after a six-month benching. He reported he did not play during that break and used the time to reassess his priorities. “I just want to win some trophies,” he added, noting he focuses on performing his role within the team rather than seeking individual recognition.

BetBoom plans to use the period before Stage 2 to add map practice with FL4MUS and refine rotations and team structure. The team aims to reach the LANXESS arena for the next phase to gain more stage points and match experience on maps they have not fully prepared.
