Team Vitality outlines cautious Japan expansion plan

Team Vitality CEO Fabien “neo” Devide plans an incremental entry into Japan with Japanese social accounts, signing fighter Shoji “Fenritti” Sho and seeking local partnerships.

Team Vitality chief Fabien “neo” Devide outlined an incremental approach to Japan that begins with Japanese-language social channels, a player signing and partnership talks rather than an immediate full-scale launch.

He noted Japan lacks the large public events Western teams often use to build awareness and connect with fans, which makes a full launch difficult for now. The club’s main Asia-Pacific hubs remain China and Singapore, where it already has stronger operations.

Initial actions include operating social accounts in Japanese and signing Shoji “Fenritti” Sho, a Japanese fighting-game competitor. The club describes these efforts as early engagement intended to help it learn about local audiences and preferences.

Devide said Vitality plans to work with established local organisations rather than direct how they run operations. “We want to approach the market with humility, learn how it works, and partner with organisations that have already been active there for years,” he added.

Looking ahead, Devide expressed interest in opening an office in Japan. Tokyo is an obvious option; he mentioned a preference for Osaka and noted Hiroshima as another possibility. Any decision on a permanent presence would follow closer ties with local groups and a clearer view of the right location and operating model.

Other international teams have used different strategies in Japan, including highly localised content and pop-culture collaborations, signing domestic fighting-game players, launching Japanese social channels and arranging local merchandise distribution agreements.

Vitality’s stated plan is phased: language-specific communications, targeted player signings and partnership development before considering significant operational investment.
