TaZ criticizes Valve’s regional restriction before Major

BC.Game coach Wiktor “TaZ” Wojtas criticized Valve’s new three-month regional restriction after it effectively ended the team’s bid to qualify for PGL Major Singapore.

BC.Game coach Wiktor “TaZ” Wojtas criticized Valve’s new three-month regional restriction after it effectively removed the team from the qualification race for PGL Major Singapore.

Valve added the restriction to the Major Supplemental Rulebook on Tuesday. It prevents teams from changing their registered region shortly before a Major and limits their ability to qualify through another region’s Valve Regional Standings (VRS) ranking.

BC.Game moved to the Asian VRS after signing Australian player Tyson “asap” Paterson and completing enough matches with him to appear in the region’s October ranking update. The roster changes took place before Valve announced the restriction.

“We followed the rules that existed at the time, built an eligible roster and subsequently appeared in the Asian VRS,” Wojtas wrote on X. “That is why introducing a new three-month regional restriction at this point of the Major qualification cycle, and applying it immediately to the upcoming Major, is difficult for me to accept.”

Wojtas acknowledged the purpose of the restriction but criticized its timing. Teams and players make roster decisions, sign contracts, arrange travel and plan their schedules based on the rules in effect at the time, he wrote.

“Changing those rules shortly before qualification creates a dangerous precedent for organisations that make decisions based on the rules in place at the time,” Wojtas wrote.

Qualification for the Singapore Major was one factor in BC.Game’s decision to sign Paterson, Wojtas added. The team would not have signed him without believing he could improve the roster and remain competitive.

BC.Game plans to communicate with Valve and respect the organisation’s final decision. The team will focus on its upcoming events while continuing to develop its young roster and seek a place in Tier 1 Counter-Strike.
