Spirit complete comeback to reach IEM Cologne playoffs

Spirit rallied from deficits to beat 9z 2-1 at the IEM Cologne Major on June 13, 2026, securing a place in the Lanxess Arena playoffs and extending an unbeaten run across Stages 2 and 3 to 6-0. The team dropped two maps across those stages.

The series opened on 9z’s map pick Overpass. Spirit built a 9-3 lead on the CT side despite losing the opening pistol, but the offense produced just three rounds in the second half and 9z recovered to win 16-12.

On Mirage, 9z again led 9-3 on defense. Spirit mounted a second-half comeback; consecutive high-impact rounds from Andrey “tN1R” Tatarinovich forced overtime, where Spirit closed out the map 16-13.

The deciding Dust2 was 6-6 at halftime. 9z won the pistol and a conversion to move ahead 11-6 on the defense, but Spirit gradually reduced the deficit, forced overtime and finished the match 16-14. A late 1v2 from Franco “dgt” Garcia offered 9z a brief lifeline but did not alter the result.

Individual performance data favored Spirit. Danil “donk” Kryshkovets led the match with 77 kills, 59 deaths, an average damage per round of 92.2 and a match rating of 1.43. Dmitry “sh1ro” Sokolov had 71 kills and a 1.22 rating. Boris “magixx” Vorobiev contributed 57 kills with a 1.09 rating. For 9z, Franco “dgt” Garcia recorded 71 kills and a 1.28 rating, while Ignacio “meyern” Meyer and Matias “HUASOPEEK” Ibañez Hernandez posted 53 and 61 kills respectively.

Spirit are the second team to clinch a playoff spot at IEM Cologne. The result repeated the matchup from Stage 2, when Spirit beat 9z 2-0 and donk posted a 2.55 series rating while 9z managed four rounds across two maps. After the match, Boris “magixx” Vorobiev described the game as “one of the hardest games of my life,” noting that 9z capitalized on a large number of mistakes. He added, “I felt like I lost three maps today.”
