PGL adds $30,000 fines for 2027 event withdrawals

PGL’s 2027 rulebook sets a $30,000 fine for teams that withdraw after confirming participation, with organisations also liable for expenses and replacement costs.

PGL’s 2027 rulebook introduces a $30,000 fine for teams that withdraw from one of the organiser’s main events after their participation has been confirmed. The team’s organisation must also reimburse PGL for arrangements already made, such as flights and accommodation, and cover the costs of the replacement team.

A roster that withdraws from a PGL event will not be eligible for a direct Valve Regional Standings (VRS) invitation to the next PGL event for which invitations are issued. That restriction applies regardless of when the withdrawal occurs or the circumstances behind it.

The reimbursement requirement and fine do not apply when a withdrawal results from a documented medical emergency or a visa refusal outside the team’s control. PGL requires official documentation, and the visa exception does not cover problems caused by a late or incomplete application.

The rules address teams registering for tournaments and later withdrawing based on their VRS position, particularly during the period before Major qualification. PGL CEO Silviu Stroie described the purpose of the penalties as “to create a more professional scene.”

The restriction on direct VRS invitations was included in PGL’s previous rulebooks and event information. The financial penalties and reimbursement requirements are new for 2027.

The timing of the financial rules may vary by event. Rules that exclude teams from the invitation process must be included in additional event information submitted 10 months before a tournament. The financial penalties could therefore apply only from PGL’s fifth 2027 event, scheduled for Sept. 4-12. Teams may still be excluded from a future event under the existing invitation rule.
