NiKo: whiff on Ancient cost Falcons momentum in CS Asia final

NiKo blamed a missed shot while flanking B cave on Ancient for shifting momentum in Falcons’ loss in the CS Asia Championships final, their seventh straight grand final defeat.

Nikola “NiKo” Kovač identified a missed shot while flanking B cave on the Ancient map as the turning moment in Falcons’ loss in the CS Asia Championships final. The defeat marked the team’s seventh consecutive grand final loss. NiKo discussed the match during a post-tournament livestream.

Falcons led 1-0 on the first map and were set to level the second map score at 10-10 when NiKo attempted a flank into B cave. He missed his initial shot and Bruno “latto” Rebelatto rotated to eliminate the flanker and record a four-kill that swung the round to the opponents.

NiKo recalled the play and said he had moved too quickly: “I tried to play a bit too fast. I tried to go for a headshot and start running.” He added that the miss affected him mentally: “This round, when I missed the guy in the back, definitely affected the half. It would have given us a higher chance of getting to overtime or winning.” He said he tried to reset but found it difficult to move on.

Earlier in the map NiKo had recovered from a 0-6 kill-death start and a 3-9 half, winning two 1v1s and helping Falcons put together a solid CT side before the mistake. His map ratings in the final were 0.93 on Ancient, then 0.54 and 0.74 on the last two maps.

NiKo described fatigue and limited time working with in-game leader Finn “karrigan” Andersen as factors after the event. He told the livestream the team had expected to win and that the loss was not acceptable: “We expected ourselves to win this event and overcome the difficulties we have had in finals. We were tired, we were exhausted… but it’s still not acceptable that we lost another final.”

Falcons said they will look for positives from the tournament and work to address the pattern of losses in grand finals. The final highlighted the impact of individual moments and the pressure players face in elimination matches at the top level of competitive Counter-Strike.
