MATYS adapts after role change as G2 go 2-0 at IEM Cologne
MATYS says he fixed weaknesses after moving to B on Mirage and Long on Dust2 as G2 opened Stage 2 at IEM Cologne 2026 with wins over M80 and Monte.
Matúš “MATYS” Šimko said he corrected weaknesses after changing positions, as G2 opened Stage 2 of the IEM Cologne Major 2026 on June 6 with two wins in Cologne: a 13-8 victory over M80 and a 22-19 win over Monte on Mirage that went to triple overtime.
Against M80, G2 built a 10-2 lead in the first half and closed out the match on the Terrorist side. The second game on Mirage extended into three overtime periods. MATYS acknowledged he made errors during the match but recovered mentally and highlighted the team’s ability to finish the comeback.
MATYS described a period of focused practice after Guy “NertZ” Iluz joined the roster. He moved to defensive roles including B on Mirage and Long on Dust2, positions opponents had targeted in recent events. He credited practice for addressing those vulnerabilities and said opponents will have a harder time exploiting him now.
On the deciding map vs Monte, MATYS recounted a key round at 15-18 where a favorable spawn let him push Middle aggressively and win an entry kill while blinded. That kill created a 5v4 that G2 converted as a unit to change the momentum.
He discussed adjustments to in-game communication following NertZ’s arrival, noting that the team now has more voices and is still finding the right balance under match pressure. MATYS contrasted practice sessions, where there is less stress for trying ideas, with official matches that require steadier coordination.
G2 has one best-of-three remaining before qualifying for Stage 3. The squad prepared extensively ahead of the Major and focused on improving their mental approach. MATYS said the team remains confident while acknowledging there are areas that still need work.
G2 will aim to secure a Stage 3 berth in the forthcoming best-of-three, carrying momentum from the two opening wins and continuing to adjust roles and communication within the lineup.
