Lenovo refocuses esports deals on events, not teams
Lenovo shifted esports spending from team sponsorships to partnerships with major competitions and the event infrastructure that supports them.
Lenovo has restructured its esports approach, moving investment away from direct team sponsorships toward partnerships with global competitions and the event infrastructure that supports them. The company supplies hardware and technical services at tournaments such as the Esports World Cup.
Volker Düring, vice president and general manager of IDG PCSD at Lenovo, said: “We don’t want to just say we give money and something happens. We really want to become a partner… in the end, be an ambassador of the sport to drive the sport and support the sport.”
At events Lenovo provides the actual equipment used by players and organisers. The company introduced new visual displays at the Esports World Cup and used the tournament as a testing site for products under professional conditions.
Lenovo says the event-focused approach reaches a broader audience across multiple game titles, while one-off team deals tend to tie a brand to a specific fanbase. The firm still supports some teams directly, including Brazil’s FURIA, but places primary emphasis on competitions and operational partnerships.
The approach mirrors Lenovo’s work in traditional sports. Its Legion gaming brand is marking its tenth year. Lenovo manages data centres and transmissions for Formula 1 events and contributed referee camera views used in FIFA World Cup 2026 broadcasts. The company has also signed a multi-year partnership with the Esports Foundation.
Lenovo says integrating equipment and services into live competitions will help align product development and marketing with the technical needs of professional play.
