Legacy coach adr barred from IEM Cologne over hand-signal breach

Legacy coach Alan “adr” Riveros is barred from coaching at IEM Cologne after repeated communication breaches, including a thumbs-up hand signal after a tactical timeout.

Legacy coach Alan “adr” Riveros has been barred from coaching at IEM Cologne for the remainder of the event after repeated breaches of coach-to-player communication rules. ESL announced the penalty following a review of multiple warnings and a final infraction during Legacy’s match against PARIVISION.

The latest incident took place during Legacy’s final tactical timeout in that match. Riveros acknowledged on a livestream that he gave a thumbs-up to a player after the timeout ended. ESL noted the coach had received several warnings for interacting with players during live rounds.

Valve’s Major Supplemental Rulebook prohibits coaches from communicating with players except during warmup, half-time and tactical timeouts. The IEM Cologne rulebook further bans non-verbal contact, including hand signals and touching, outside those windows. The Cologne rules state a coach receives one warning that remains in force for the event; a repeat breach can lead to ejection and additional sanctions if the incident affected the match.

Tournament referees monitor matches and issue warnings or penalties when breaches occur. Organizers noted the warnings remained active and that the final hand-signal incident constituted a further violation.

Legacy will continue the event without Riveros standing behind the team for their remaining matches. ESL’s statement read: “After reviewing repeated violations of the Major ruleset, the decision has been made that adr will no longer be permitted to coach the team for the remainder of the event’s matches.”
