Lake, Swisher lead M80 past NRG to reach IEM Cologne Stage 2

M80 defeated NRG 2-0 at IEM Cologne to advance to Stage 2 of the Major. The match took place in the tournament’s opening rounds, with M80 winning on Ancient and Inferno to move on and NRG dropping to the 2-2 bracket.

Ancient opened as a back-and-forth map. M80 led early on defense before Michael “Grim” Wince produced a 1v3 clutch that helped NRG reach five rounds by halftime. After the side switch, Mason “Lake” Sanderson led M80’s attack with a run of high-impact kills, including a four-kill A-site round during which he shouted “you guys suck,” a moment captured on the broadcast.

On Inferno, NRG closed their CT half at 8-4. Swisher recorded several aggressive Tec-9 entry kills that kept M80 competitive in the early rounds. M80’s defensive rotations and coordinated retakes regained control after the pistol round, and the team closed the map through a combination of early-round aggression and post-plant plays.

Individual statistics reflected M80’s performance. Josh “JBa” Barutt led the match for kills with 35 and recorded the highest rating on M80 at 1.46, posting an average damage per round of 83.6. Michael “Swisher” Schmid finished 33-23 with a 1.42 rating and 77.0 ADR. Mason “Lake” Sanderson matched Swisher with 33 kills, posted the team’s highest ADR at 89.4 and registered a 1.33 rating. For NRG, Michael “Grim” Wince had 32 kills and a 1.24 rating; the rest of NRG’s lineup recorded lower kill totals and ratings.

M80’s win guarantees their place in Stage 2 of IEM Cologne. NRG will play an elimination match in the 2-2 bracket tomorrow for a chance to remain in the tournament.

A team source recalled that M80 focused on maintaining composure after a narrow loss to B8 in the previous round, and on-map emotion surfaced when Lake shouted after his four-kill site take, a moment noted by the broadcast.
