Koala rises to No. 15 on international prospects list

João “koala” Pfeffer, 21, is ranked No. 15 in an international prospects list and is the highest-ranked Brazilian prospect. He has five Brazilian LAN titles, was named MVP at CBCS Masters Xeque Mate 2025 and made his Major debut at IEM Cologne 2026.

Pfeffer grew up in Tucuruí, in the northern state of Pará. He first watched games at a small internet cafe and received a home PC for his seventh birthday. He picked the nickname “koala” from a stock image that came on his computer.

Limited local internet infrastructure affected his early practice. He recalled that daytime ping could exceed 200ms, so he played at night: “I would wake up at midnight to play Counter-Strike for like six or seven hours.” As a teenager he played 100 to 200 pickup matches per month and reached the top rank on GamersClub.

At about 14 he decided to pursue Counter-Strike professionally after reaching Challenger League. His mother arranged for him to move to Minas Gerais to attend school closer to São Paulo, which allowed more stable practice time. He said his mother eventually supported his career: “At the bottom of her heart she wanted me to do the things I want to do in my life, so I appreciate that very much.”

Pfeffer’s first recorded matches began in 2021 with Ceará. He spent a month with Elevate in early 2022 and then joined FURIA’s academy team, traveling to Europe for academy league events. He posted a 0.91 rating with the academy and described the period as a learning phase. He later joined Sharks, where he won four domestic LANs, and added a fifth national title with another team. His tournament results include two Fragadelphia runner-up finishes and top-four placings at Roman Imperium Cup, DraculaN and Stake Ranked.

On the server, Pfeffer plays mainly as an anchor and lurker and prefers slower, measured roles. He described his temperament as cautious: “I’m a bit afraid,” he admitted, and said anchoring lets him focus on specific duties. He studies top players in similar positions to learn utility use and current team strategies, mentioning ropz and Jimpphat as examples of players he watches.

Pfeffer played his first Major at IEM Cologne 2026. He has said qualifying for a Major is not the end goal and aims to win major international events, including a Major title. For 2026 his priorities include turning domestic success into deeper international runs and improving in high-level match decision-making.
