Glasgow hospital charity seeks Gamer-in-Residence

Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity has advertised a one-year Gamer-in-Residence role with a fixed salary of £24,500. The position is based at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow and is intended to support the more than 500 children and young people treated there each day.

The postholder will deliver scheduled gaming sessions, augmented and virtual reality activities and other play events across multiple consoles. Duties include organising ward and communal-area sessions, staffing hospital events and developing ideas for new approaches to play provision.

The role sits within the charity team that supports patients across wards and communal areas. The charity’s activities provide distraction, social interaction and creative engagement for patients during treatment, procedures or long stays.

The vacancy was posted on LinkedIn by the staff member who set up the service in 2024; the listing was later removed from the platform.

Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity has supported families at the Royal Hospital for Children for 25 years and has expanded the use of gaming, augmented reality and virtual reality in recent play and wellbeing programmes.

Hospitals and charities have used gaming in paediatric care for rehabilitation, pain management and social connection. Established organisations such as Make-A-Wish and SpecialEffect have worked to adapt gaming for children with disabilities.

The position is a 12-month contract aimed at expanding the hospital’s play services and supporting children and families during care.
