G2 coach: SunPayus must stop overthinking at Cologne Major

After a narrow Stage 3 loss to Falcons at the Cologne Major, G2 Esports beat FUT in a close best-of-three. Coach Eetu ‘sAw’ Saha spoke after the match about team preparation and individual form.

sAw said G2 made small tactical adjustments rather than overhaul its game plan to face FUT’s aggressive style. He noted FUT picked Ancient instead of Anubis and left Mirage as the decider. Many rounds developed into reactive, XvX situations that required decisive individual actions and strict crosshair discipline.

On AWPer Álvaro ‘SunPayus’ García, the coach acknowledged the player has struggled at the Major. ‘It sucks, it sucks for him,’ he said, while adding that SunPayus is often in the right positions but has had trouble with confidence and shot execution. ‘He needs to find his form again, like what he had these last couple of events before coming here, but I think that comes from not overthinking in the end.’

sAw pointed out SunPayus showed an uptick earlier in the year and at recent events and suggested recent game updates or pressure could have affected his performance. He also cited the Swiss-stage schedule of daily best-of-threes as a factor that can drain energy and increase pressure.

On Guy ‘NertZ’ Iluz, the mid-season signing, the coach said the rookie has added firepower and more vocal leadership from active positions. He described improvements in NertZ’s in-game calling and round understanding and estimated the player is ‘more like 80-90%’ integrated three months after joining, compared with an initial expectation of three to six months for full integration.

sAw noted G2’s recent matches against top opponents have been close but often ended in losses. He said the team aims to convert these tight games into wins. G2 is scheduled to face another high-level opponent the following day and will need further victories in best-of-threes to advance to the knockout stage.
