An audience member entered the stage area during the second map of the IEM Cologne Major semi-final between Falcons and Spirit at LANXESS Arena and was removed by security.
Organisers had stationed additional security around the catwalk ahead of the match but the individual still gained unauthorized access to the playing area. Event staff intervened and escorted the person out of the venue.
After the removal, organisers posted more personnel around the catwalk and stage for the remainder of the match and the tournament. ESL reported that its response was immediate and the incident did not cause further disruption to play.
In a statement, ESL wrote: “Earlier today, a security breach occurred when a fan gained unauthorized access to the stage area. We took immediate action and removed the offender from the venue. Additional security measures have since been implemented to help prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The safety and security of players, talent, staff, and attendees remain our top priority, and we take matters of this nature very seriously.”
Organisers confirmed they will maintain the increased security levels for the remainder of the event to protect players, broadcast staff, talent and fans.
