Falcons beat Vitality 2-1 to reach IEM Cologne semis

Falcons beat Vitality 2-1 in the IEM Cologne quarter-finals, ending Vitality’s bid for a Major three-peat and advancing Falcons to a semi-final against Spirit.

Falcons defeated Vitality 2-1 in the IEM Cologne Major quarter-finals on Friday in Cologne, ending Vitality’s attempt at three consecutive Major titles. The win advances Falcons to a semi-final against Spirit, scheduled for June 20 at 17:00 local time.

The first map, Anubis, opened with a 5-0 CT run for Falcons after Maksim “kyousuke” Lukin recorded a four-kill in the pistol round. Vitality recovered on the T side and took control of much of the middle stages, but Falcons regained momentum late. Kyousuke finished the map with a multi-kill that closed out the round and secured the opening map for Falcons.

On Inferno, Falcons took an early 2-0 lead after a team ace in the pistol round. Vitality responded with a 6-1 run to take the lead, and the two sides traded rounds through the remainder of the map. Robin “ropz” Kool produced a high-impact performance with the MP9 in Vitality’s late push, and Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut delivered several multi-kill rounds that allowed Vitality to force a decider.

The third map decided the tie in Falcons’ favour. Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov and kyousuke led Falcons across the series. M0NESY finished with 63 kills and 40 deaths and a 1.26 rating; kyousuke had 52 kills and 50 deaths with a 1.43 rating. Falcons’ coordinated multi-kills in key rounds helped them close the match 2-1.

Vitality’s top performers for the series included ZywOo with 54 kills and 42 deaths and ropz with 52 kills and 42 deaths. Other Vitality players recorded lower ratings and could not produce enough winning rounds to extend the match past three maps. Vitality’s elimination removes their chance at a third straight Major title.

The result extends Falcons’ winning run over Vitality to four consecutive matches dating to ESL Pro League Season 22. Falcons also surpassed their previous best Major finish, a quarter-final at the Budapest Major, by reaching the IEM Cologne semi-finals.
