Falcons beat Astralis to reach Esports World Cup playoffs
Falcons beat Astralis 2-0 (Ancient 13-7, Dust2 13-11) to advance to the Esports World Cup playoffs in Paris; Round of 16 begins Aug. 19.
Falcons defeated Astralis in a two-map series at the Esports World Cup in Paris, winning Ancient 13-7 and Dust2 13-11 to secure a place in the knockout stage. The Cologne Major champions have a week to prepare before the Round of 16 begins on Aug. 19. Astralis moves to the lower bracket and will face the winner of BetBoom versus Ninjas in Pyjamas on Aug. 16.
On Ancient, Nikola “NiKo” Kovač provided an early burst that put Falcons up 6-1. Astralis recovered to level the score by halftime after Gytis “ryu” Glušauskas opened Middle and Jakob “jabbi” Nygaard won key duels, but Falcons won the pistol after the swap and limited Astralis to a single round in the second half, closing the map 13-7. NiKo finished the series with 41 kills and a 1.52 rating, while Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov added 37 kills and a 1.47 rating.
Dust2 became chaotic from round two when m0NESY converted two Scout headshots on a force-buy. The map featured multiple low-economy rounds, late-round scrambles and individual plays from Victor “Staehr” Staehr. Falcons claimed a third pistol after the switch and reached match point at 12-6 following a 1v2 from René “TeSeS” Madsen. A fumbled 5v3 allowed Astralis to mount a comeback that extended the map to 24 rounds, but NiKo and m0NESY closed out Dust2 with doubles to finish 13-11.
In a post-match interview, NiKo acknowledged, “we tried to close the game out too early,” referring to the run Astralis mounted on Dust2. TeSeS’s late 1v2 and m0NESY’s early force-buy heroics were decisive moments across the series.
With the victory, Falcons advance to the Esports World Cup playoffs and will prepare for their Round of 16 match. Astralis drops to the lower bracket and will attempt to recover in the Aug. 16 match against the BetBoom–Ninjas in Pyjamas winner.
