British Esports Arena to open late summer in Sunderland

British Esports confirmed the British Arena will open later this summer and reported overwhelming demand for bookings across its Sunderland sites, including the National Esports Performance Campus, The Place accommodation and office space, and local gaming houses.

The organisation reported higher-than-expected interest ahead of the arena’s launch, covering competitive events, education programmes and commercial use of its spaces. The surge in bookings has prompted a recruitment drive and a number of internal promotions.

British Esports is hiring multiple venue support staff and is seeking candidates with experience in brand activation, campaign management, content and social media. Advertised salaries range from £30,000 to £40,000 depending on experience.

The organisation announced senior role changes. Alice Whorley has been promoted from Head of Operations to VP of Operations and will oversee all facilities, including the British Arena. Kalam Neale moves from Head of Education to VP of Education, Skills and Innovation with an expanded brief that includes coaching and education support services. Zuhrah Samim has moved from Group HR Manager to VP of People and Culture, focusing on staff support during the expansion.

British Esports described the British Arena as a multipurpose venue and listed potential uses such as live music, comedy nights, private bookings, broadcasts, games-industry events, esports tournaments, sports events, premier match-day experiences and conferences. The campus and nearby accommodation are intended to support event organisers and education activities including coaching and student esports courses.

The organisation cited Sunderland’s location and cost profile as factors in the venue’s appeal, noting the city is outside traditional hubs and offers lower costs and easier access for northern and Scottish teams. British Esports also pointed to ferry links from Sunderland and Newcastle to the Netherlands as potentially useful for logistics with mainland Europe.

Larger LAN and live events in 2026 drew strong crowds, including a Call of Duty event at the NEC and a VALORANT tournament at the Copper Box. British Esports plans to publish a calendar of events after the arena opens, using on-site facilities and nearby accommodation to host tournaments and industry gatherings.

British Esports framed the National Esports Performance Campus and associated facilities as complementary to venue operations, combining competitive events with education and coaching services. Bookings continue to arrive and the organisation is expanding staffing and operational capacity to handle events across its Sunderland sites.
