British Esports Arena to open late summer as bookings surge

British Esports will open the British Arena in Sunderland late this summer. Advance enquiries and bookings across the federation’s Sunderland sites have surged, prompting a recruitment drive and several internal promotions.

Demand is higher than anticipated for the British Arena, the National Esports Performance Campus, The Place accommodation and office space, and the organisation’s gaming houses in Sunderland.

The organisation is recruiting venue support staff and roles in brand activation, campaign management, content and social media. Advertised salaries range from £30,000 to £40,000 depending on experience. The hires are intended to staff the new arena and support operations across the site’s network.

Several staff have been promoted to manage expanded responsibilities. Alice Whorley moves from Head of Operations to VP of Operations and will oversee all facilities including the British Arena. Kalam Neale advances from Head of Education to VP of Education, Skills and Innovation with added responsibility for coaching and education support services. Zuhrah Samim moves from Group HR Manager to VP of People and Culture to support staff during the organisation’s expansion.

The British Arena is being developed for multiple uses: esports tournaments and LAN events, live music and comedy nights, private bookings, broadcasts, games industry activity, sports events, premier match day experiences and conferences. Its location next to The Place’s student accommodation and office space is intended to support the federation’s training, coaching and esports student courses.

British Esports cited lower operating costs in Sunderland compared with London and Manchester, closer travel links to Glasgow and Edinburgh for Scottish teams, and ferry connections from the North East to the Netherlands that could assist logistics for mainland Europe events.

The federation noted this year’s UK esports calendar has already included notable LAN events and expects the dedicated arena paired with local hosting facilities to add capacity for tournaments and industry gatherings. The organisation’s blog reported demand for competitive events alongside a wider range of public and private uses, which shaped staffing and operational plans ahead of the arena opening.

The update did not include direct quotes from federation leadership. British Esports invited applications for the advertised roles as it scales venue operations and prepares to receive bookings for the new arena and associated Sunderland spaces.
