Bic Camera sponsors Japanese esports team VARREL
Bic Camera will sponsor VARREL’s domestic and international competition, broadcasts, events and fan activities, and collaborate on fan experiences and market development.
Japanese esports team VARREL has signed a sponsorship agreement with retail chain Bic Camera to support the team’s domestic and international competition, broadcasts, events and fan activities. The partners said they will also work on expanding fan experiences and introducing esports to a broader audience. Neither party disclosed the financial value or the duration of the agreement.
Bic Camera will provide support as VARREL competes in tournaments and appears on streams and at public events. The companies said they plan to collaborate on fan engagement initiatives and broader market development, but the announcement did not include specific marketing campaigns or a timeline for joint activities.
In a translated statement, Bic Camera described esports as having “great potential as a competitive sport and as a way to connect people and create a new form of entertainment culture.” The company referenced its philosophy of “bringing joy to customers” and said it aims to deliver excitement and enjoyment to customers through esports while contributing to social development by creating new value.
Ko Sakuma, representative director of CELLORB Co., Ltd., the operator of VARREL, commented in translation that the team was “extremely honored” to have Bic Camera as a sponsor. He noted Bic Camera’s long history of supplying devices and technologies to consumers and supporting Japan’s gaming culture, and said the retailer’s approach resonates with CELLORB’s mission, “Connecting the World through Play.”
Bic Camera is one of Japan’s largest retail chains, known for multi-story stores often located near major train stations that sell electronics, appliances, cosmetics, food and other goods. The company trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under the ticker 3048 and has a market capitalization of about $1.73 billion (roughly ¥282 billion).
VARREL fields teams across multiple titles, including VALORANT, League of Legends, Overwatch 2, Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8. The team has earned more than $1.2 million in prize money to date. CELLORB, based in Tokyo, raised ¥1 billion (about $6.7 million) last year and said the funds would be used for talent acquisition, intellectual property development and system expansion.
The sponsorship will back VARREL’s competitive activities and fan-facing content, supporting appearances on streams and at events and efforts to create new experiences for supporters. The companies framed the partnership as part of broader efforts to grow the esports market in Japan by reaching new audiences and building fan engagement.
