Windows 11 Low-Latency Profile tested to speed app launches

Microsoft is testing a Windows 11 Low-Latency Profile that briefly raises CPU frequency to speed app launches and UI opens; insiders report up to 40% faster launches and 70% faster menus.

Microsoft is testing a Low-Latency Profile for Windows 11 that temporarily raises processor frequency when users open apps or interact with system menus. According to people familiar with the plans, the boost lasts between one and three seconds before the CPU returns to its normal operating state.

People involved in the tests report that in-box apps such as Edge and Outlook saw the largest gains, with app launches improving by as much as 40 percent. System UI elements, including the Start menu and context menus, opened as much as 70 percent faster in some measurements. Third-party applications are expected to benefit, though measured gains vary by app.

The feature runs automatically in the background and does not include a user-facing toggle in the build currently being tested. Microsoft is trialing the profile inside the Windows Insider Program, where engineers are adjusting how long and how frequently the short frequency bursts occur.

Engineers are tuning the bursts to limit impact on battery life and device thermals. People familiar with the testing say the short duration of the boost helps minimize additional power draw and heat, but the behavior may change as development continues.

The Low-Latency Profile is part of Microsoft’s Windows K2 initiative, a set of efforts to improve Windows 11 performance and responsiveness. Other work under K2 includes optimizing legacy code paths, migrating more components to WinUI 3, improving app launches after boot, refining memory management and speeding File Explorer. Recent Windows 11 release preview builds have shown faster File Explorer launch times.

Microsoft has not announced a public rollout date. The feature remains in internal testing and could be modified before a general release. Windows Insider Program participants are likely to encounter the profile first, though no specific Insider build has been confirmed.
