Aleksib gets suspended sentence for aggravated tax fraud

A Finnish district court convicted NAVI captain Aleksi “Aleksib” Virolainen of aggravated tax fraud and sentenced him to four months in suspended prison.

A Finnish district court found that Virolainen failed to declare €53,000 in income from Valve Corporation in 2019. The undeclared earnings came from his participation in the IEM Katowice and StarLadder Berlin Majors and resulted in about €28,000 in unpaid income tax.

Virolainen admitted that the income was missing from his tax return but denied intentionally trying to avoid tax. He maintained that he initially believed the amount had been properly reported and taxed. He has since paid the unpaid tax.

The court found that the omission was intentional and that Virolainen sought financial gain by failing to report the income. His four-month sentence is suspended for two years, so he will not serve prison time unless he commits another offense during the probation period.

The conviction will be added to Virolainen’s criminal record. It could complicate visa applications and travel to international Counter-Strike tournaments. It is not clear whether the ruling will affect his ability to compete abroad or his position with Natus Vincere.

Virolainen can appeal the decision until November 26. He had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.
